Thomas Garner Advisory – (2018 – Present) Focusing on renewable energy, agri and water nexus. Advising; Danish Embassy and Trade office in South Africa; Large agricultural players; Makuya Tribe in Limpopo, South Africa on commercialisation of the Makuya Nature Reserve; Mfengu Community in Tsitsikamma on business opportunities in the agri, energy and water industries. Assisting a project owner in developing a circa 100 MW wind project in the Mpumalanga. Leading SAIPPA as chairman in advocating for a restructured electricity supply industry.
Exxaro Resources – Business Development Manager (2016 – 2018), Energy; Leading the effort of establishing phase 2 of Exxaro’s Energy Business; Focusing on disruptive technologies and business models; Leading a multifunctional team.
Cennergi (Pty) Ltd – Chief Executive Officer (2012 – 2016); Forming Cennergi thus facilitating Exxaro’s move into energy. May 2012 Cennergi was named preferred bidder for wind farms totalling 234 MW. The two projects totalling circa US$700m of total project cost. Strong relationships formed wiht the local communities in Tsitsikamma and Bedford, driving responsible enterprise development and stakeholder engagement.
Exxaro Resources – Manager Growth, Energy (2006 – 2012); Establishing Exxaro as an independent power producer with operations in co-generation, wind, solar and gas generation. Main responsibilities included business intelligence, environmental scanning, opportunity development, project ranking, feasibility studies (technical and business case).
Kumba Resources – Opportunity Manager, Business Development (2009 – 2011); create and manage a basket of high quality growth opportunities in the KUMBA Coal growth portfolio.
Iscor Heavy Minerals – Contract Engineer (2000 – 2001); Contract Engineer of the Slag and Reductant Processing Plants. Responsible for the contract management to design, supply, manufacture, deliver, erect and commission the plant. Responsible for tender evaluation and contractor appointment.
Iscor Tshikondeni Mine – Assistant Resident Engineer, (1996 – 2000); Leading and managing the Underground Engineering and Maintenance team, consisting of development projects, quality management, mine expansion, maintenance and the underground information management backbone. Design and Implementation of the management processes and systems of the Underground Engineering business unit as well as reliability centred maintenance of infrastructure and equipment.
